What is a good recipe for a basic smoothie? mine always seem to taste bland
What are you putting in your smoothie to begin with? Is it a meal replacement, such as a breakfast smoothie? Or just a snack?
I love to start with:
1 frozen banana
and add:
1 cup non-dairy milk (almond/coconut)
One handful of greens (spinach/lettuce)
1/2 C Flavor of the day (strawberries, apple, pear, pumpkin)
If you like coffee:
1 Frozen Banana
1 Starbucks Via Packet
1 C Non-Dairy Milk
1 Scoop Protein powder (I use Vega Protein)
The frozen banana supplies flavor and creaminess nothing else can. So buy a bunch, peel, and freeze in bags. Use one per day!
You can do anything with a smoothie, it just depends on why/when you’re drinking it.
For a meal replacement, be sure to add some protein.
Options:
2 Tbsp Peanut Butter
2 Tbsp Chia Seeds
Soy-Free Protein Powder (I like the company Vega and they can be seen on My Pantry)
Handful of Almond Meal (if you can’t find almond meal, grind the almonds first into a powder in your blender before adding other ingredients)
1 C oat flour/ ground oatmeal
Fiber Options:
Handful of Flax Meal
Another great thing to do is soak 2Tbsp chia seeds + non dairy milk over night, then add that as your liquid.
Chia is very rich in omega-3 fatty acids, even more so than flax seeds. And it has another advantage over flax: chia is so rich in antioxidants that the seeds don’t deteriorate and can be stored for long periods without becoming rancid. And, unlike flax, they do not have to be ground to make their nutrients available to the body. Chia seeds also provide fiber (25 grams give you 6.9 grams of fiber) as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum, niacin, and zinc.
You can find them at Trader Joes, or online.
